Pierce Transit and Little Church on the Prairie Recognized for Community Support

Pierce Transit and Little Church on the Prairie are continual community partners, especially during an emergency. West Pierce Fire & Rescue (WPFR) Deputy Chief Hallie McCurdy had the opportunity to recognize these groups at the recent Lakewood City Council meeting for their efforts.

On June 26, 2024, WPFR crews responded to an apartment fire in Lakewood. This incident left at least 12 units displaced. On this particular scene, there were various needs, including temporary shelter and meals. Pierce Transit is a consistent partner for WPFR and regularly bring busses to emergency scenes to shelter displaced residents from the heat, rain or cold. During this apartment fire, Pierce Transit went the extra mile to bring snacks and water for those needing to use the bus.

Little Church on the Prairie is a newer partner, as the West Pierce Emergency Management Coalition recently signed an agreement with the church just weeks prior to offer temporary shelter, should an emergency arise. During this incident, the church opened its doors without hesitation as an evacuation center. They also invited those in the center to stay for dinner and many did.

Without these partners, helping displaced residents becomes much more difficult. WPFR is proud to partner with agencies who value the importance of community and offer their support when it is needed most.
